National Plant a Flower Day
March 12
National #PlantAFlower Day is a good time to start preparing (or at least seriously planning) your garden so it will be ready to plant when weather permits. Go through your checklist -- do you have soil? Mulch? Soil amendments? Fertilizer? Garden tools? Gloves?
Pre-order your plants now from Pemberton's (the earlier the better). This should include tropicals, citrus trees, summer bulbs, Kentucky natives, and of course annuals and perennials.

International Day of Forests
March 21
The United Nations General Assembly proclaimed March 21 the International Day of Forests to celebrate and raise awareness of the importance of all types of forests. Almost any size yard (even a tiny one) can become a forest, if planned and planted correctly.
We'll have locally grown, starter-sized 1-, 2- and 3-gallon native Kentucky trees again this spring, so let us know what you want and we'll have them for you when you're ready to plant. We can also order much larger trees and non-natives.
Don't know where to begin? We can help you create a "Pocket Forest" in your yard with an outstanding assortment of some of Kentucky's most beautiful and important young trees to fit any budget.

Today is National Weed Appreciation Day!
Some of the plants that are considered "weeds" are actually greatly helpful to people and tremendously useful by pollinators.

MilkWEED*
ButterflyWEED*
JewelWEED (in the photo)
Joe Pye WEED*
SneezeWEED
IronWEED
PokeWEED*
ThimbleWEED
Order them as soon as possible and we'll let you know when they are here a little later in the spring.

We'll have them in starter-sized pots to make it easy on your budget, or we can acquire larger, more established trees for you.
More info coming soon, but in the meantime, we have a short video on Redbud trees from the UK Extension office. See the link, below.

National Banana Day
April 16
Do you know that the town of Fulton, Kentucky is known as the Banana Capital of the World? Or that it's possible to grow banana trees outdoors in Kentucky? We offer both tropical and hardy banana trees, so stop by and we'll help you decide which trees are best for your situation. The chance of growing edible bananas is slim, so they're gown in Kentucky primarily for their lush, tropical foliage.

International Bat Day
April 17
Kentucky's bats, along with all other bats in the world, are extremely important to our planet and local ecosystem, but they are in trouble. We can do some things to help them in our little corner of the world by planting flowers and trees that attract nighttime pollinators (such as moths), which they like to eat. Our Kentucky bats' favorite food is mosquitos, so it's a tremendous benefit having bats coming into our yards.
We have a link to a list of bat-friendly plants that you can add to your yard to assist Kentucky's little helpers. We have many of these plants in stock or can acquire them for you.
Remember to NEVER use outdoor insecticides, so you won't harm the bats who are dining on insects.
