Celebrate Earth Day!
April 22
A very simple, inexpensive way to celebrate Earth Day and make a big impact is by planting a tree. Very few things in the world offer more bang-for-your buck than trees, and we have a few extra good ones! It's also a great, meaningful activity for your children, grandchildren, school, church, business, or yourself to enjoy.
Stop by to purchase or order, and take a special look at our 1-gallon Bur Oak trees (truly one of the best trees on the planet, our nation's official tree, the official tree of Lexington. and a genuine Kentucky native!). Only $25

Turtles in the 'Hood
May 23
Today is World #TurtleDay, so it's a good time to talk about a few of the simple ways that your yard and garden can help welcome and accommodate these important, harmless, wild, and cuuuuuute creatures by adding the right type of plants and allowing turtle habitats to exist in your yard. We'll focus on Kentucky's Box Turtles: first and most crucially, never use pesticides or herbicides outdoors. Provide fresh water in the form of a rain garden or shallow water feature. For food, they'll help you by feasting on your dandelions, violets, clover, mushrooms, grubs, beetles, slugs, crickets, and grasshoppers. You can cultivate a variety of berry producing plants like Elderberry, Blueberry, Blackberry, Strawberry, Mulberry, Persimmon, and wild Grapes to help them (we can help you acquire these plants, which will also benefit songbirds). Box turtles may occasionally look for treats in your veggie garden, too, so plant some extras to distract them from your favorites! (We still have a few veggie plants in stock.) For habitat, provide trees for shade, dense groundcover for shelter, and loose soil that is never tilled for their egg laying and hatching. Provide a warm spot for sunbathing. Set your lawn mower blades as high as they'll go and stay observant to reduce fatal turtle strikes (it's also better for your grass to keep the blades high). Also crucial: don't keep wild turtles and pets and don't move them to a new location!
